Guidelines for Sponsorship of Prayers, Pujas and Ceremonies

The tradition of sponsoring prayers, pujas and other Buddhist ceremonies is an ancient one dating back to before Lord Shakyamuni Buddha's time.  Whereas Lamas are constantly praying for the welfare of all sentient beings equaniminously,  sponsors may wish for focused efforts towards a particular concern and therefore opt to support a ceremony for positive effect. Based on an understanding that the situations of our physical reality stem from countless cause and effect (Karmic) roots, we can accumulate merit by becoming a cause in the performance of ceremonies that are dedicated to all beings and also benefit a specific concern to alleviate suffering and hail in auspicious circumstances.

Pujas are arranged after e-mail communications between organizing Lamas and sponsors. There are no set prices for prayers as benefactors can offer as they wish.  However, for more complex ceremonies and pujas, elaborate preparations and practices are required which can take from one or several days to complete by a few or several Lamas.  For this reason, it is necessary to cover the costs for these rituals in order for them for them to be performed properly.

Yearly Sanku Vajrayogini Jatra

Every year the townspeople of Sanku ascend the mountain on the northern side of their village, climbing the sacred dwelling place of the goddess Vajrayogini (Kargayogini). From there, they accompany her and her two escorts, Baghini (Tiger-headed Dakini) and Singhini (Lion-headed Dakini), down the mountainside to the village, to bless her followers.

The yearly Sanku festival, or Jatra as it is called in Nepali, presents participants with the opportunity to worship the Goddess as she passes by various locations on her descent.

Evam Mingyur Ling has created a retreat period at the time of this festival, dedicated to the Goddess in her various forms. A special two week mediation period takes place with both group Dakini Sadhana practice as well as individual silent retreat.

The retreat begins on the first day of descent of the Dakinis from their mountain abode, joining the special procession of the deity down the hillside. As she passes the retreat land, special aspiration prayers are made for a successful retreat and that the land be blessed. The Great Accomplishment ceremony commences on this evening, and continues in an unbroken manner, day and night, for 8-9 days. The retreat ends when the procession returns to the mountain temple. At this point, retreatants will continue individual retreats on the same, or other forms of the Dakini.
